Croatian Coastal Licence: How to Prepare Online

The Croatian Coastal Licence (Boat Skipper Category B) is the most sought-after boating licence for Croatia charter. Thanks to its straightforward examination structure – an exclusively oral theory examination, no mandatory driving lessons – it is ideally suited to structured online preparation.

In this article you will learn how to prepare for the examination step by step using online resources, and what material you will need.

Step 1: Understand What the Examination Requires

The examination covers 5 subject areas:

  • Navigation – chart work, coordinates, course and distance measurement, compass, GPS, IALA buoyage
  • Marine Engineering – engines, fuel, electrical systems, fire prevention, environmental protection
  • Seamanship, Regulations & Meteorology – Croatian maritime law, weather, knots
  • Manoeuvring & Safety – COLREGs, lights, signals, first aid
  • Radiotelephony – GMDSS, MAYDAY, DSC, phonetic alphabet, NAVTEX

The oral examination takes 15–30 minutes. The particular challenges are the nautical chart tasks and knot tying.

Step 2: Choose the Right Study Material

Not all online material is of equal quality. Look for the following criteria:

  • Complete coverage of all 5 exam chapters according to the current Pravilnik
  • Exam-oriented questions & answers (not just theory)
  • Chart exercises with solutions
  • Video links for visual learners (knots, chart work, COLREG animations)
  • Registration form and step-by-step exam guide
  • Accessible on all devices: PC, tablet, smartphone

Step 3: Structured Study Plan (Example: 3 Weeks)
